How
to Resize the cut by hand files using Microsoft Word and the PNG files.
The PNGs are separated into individual files based
on color. You will need to import each PNG into Microsoft Word and print
each file separately. If you want to resize the design you need to make
sure that you resize each file in exactly the same way so that they
all print at the correct size.
First
let's take a look at the file structure for the Butterfly project. You
can download the Butterfly Paper Piecing Project for free here.
We will be using the files in the "Cut_By_Hand_Files" folder.
Inside that folder are PDF files and PNG files. If you do NOT
want to resize the pattern then you can just double-click on each PDF
file and print them onto the paper of your choice.
Open the Reference
Sheet so that you can see what the project looks like.
Decide the approximate size that you would like to make your butterfly.
The default width of the butterfly is 3 inches. So decide if you would
like to make it bigger or smaller. In this tutorial we make it 4.5".

Now,
open Microsoft Word so we can resize the pattern pieces.

The format Picture
dialog box will appear. Click on the Size
tab that is located along the top of the dialog box.

You need to lock the aspect ratio so that the image resizes in both
height and width and does not get distorted.

Change the width to 4.5". The height and scale will automatically
update. We need to remember the Scale as that is what we will use when
resizing the other pattern pieces so write down the scale.
Click OK.

After you print, just click on the wings image and hit the delete key.
Or if you want to save this for the future you could save the file and
then open a blank document.
Now we are going to resize the Inner Wings in the same way. Click on
the Insert menu and then click on Picture and then click on From File.
The Insert Picture dialog box will pop up.

You can now print this and then either delete the image or save it and
start a new document.
Finally, let's insert the last piece of the pattern, the body parts.
Click on the Insert menu and then click on Picture and then click on
From File. The Insert Picture dialog box will pop up.

So now you have resized the butterfly project to 4.5" inches and
you have printed the patterns onto cardstock. You can now cut out all
of the pieces and assemble them.
How to print multiple patterns per page
If you plan to make several of the same butterflies for invitations
for example then you can save time and paper by printing out several
of each pattern per page. Start a blank document and click on the Insert
menu and then click on Picture and then click on From File. The Insert
Picture dialog box will pop up.

If you make a mistake, just click on the Edit menu and then click on
Undo and then try again.

Now you have 4 sets of wings on one page. Click on File and then on
Print to print this onto the cardstock of your choice.
Do the same thing for the inner wings and body parts and you will quickly
have 4 butterfly patterns ready to be cut out and assembled.

Have fun with your
butterfly project! You can download this Butterfly Paper Piecing Project

Happy Crafting!
